If you own or manage a flat-roofed building in Metro Atlanta, you will eventually have to choose between TPO and EPDM. Both are single-ply membranes, both are proven, and both will outlast a poorly installed version of the other.
Here is the honest comparison, without steering you toward whichever one is easier for a crew to install.
TPO: the white reflective option
Thermoplastic polyolefin is a white membrane whose seams are heat-welded rather than glued. Those welded seams are genuinely stronger than the sheet itself, which removes the most common failure point in single-ply roofing.
The white surface is the headline feature in Georgia. It reflects a large share of solar radiation instead of absorbing it, which lowers rooftop temperatures and takes measurable load off cooling systems through the summer. On a large-footprint building with heavy HVAC use, that difference shows up in the utility bill.

It handles temperature swings better than almost anything else, stays flexible in cold, and repairs easily. A puncture in EPDM is a straightforward patch, which matters when your roof gets regular foot traffic for HVAC servicing.

How to actually choose
Start with your energy profile. If the building has significant conditioned space under the roof and high summer cooling costs, TPO's reflectivity usually wins on total cost of ownership in Georgia's climate.
If the roof sees heavy foot traffic, has a lot of penetrations and equipment, or is on a building you intend to hold for the very long term, EPDM's repairability and durability record are strong arguments.
Budget matters too, but be careful with it. The price difference between the two systems is smaller than the price difference between a careful installation and a rushed one. Detail work at seams, penetrations, and edges determines whether you get twenty-five years or eight.
The third option: coating what you have
If your existing membrane is intact and the insulation underneath is dry, a silicone or acrylic roof coating can add years of service life for a fraction of a full tear-off. It seals seams, restores the reflective surface, and eliminates the disruption of a replacement.
